...anyhow i read Brendan's interview with a Houston artist named Mark Flood. I was familiar with Culturcide and with the piece that has been up at Max Fish forever, way above the bar. NO IDEA it was same person. I am also obviously shocked when anything from Houston penetrates into whatever this world I am in is.

Philip Reed III

...anyhow i am watching the 'great mccarthy' episode (of Miami Vice) yesterday and the recurring character i believe called izzy, a squirrelly little informant guy, is being interrogated by the dudes (even castillo) about this champion boat racer whom they suspect. izzy describes him as the "tintoretto of smugglers," or something like that.

i just finished this book, which hinges (haha) on an old music critic's religious prostration before the painting of tintoretto's, "the white-bearded man." its a good book, obviously heady but kind of a looser beckett looseness to help you along.

so any art history person would know who the painter is, i suppose, perhaps even a casual art connoisseur, but what a weird line for a show like this (in fact it is little things like this that increase my love for the show).

so i went over to imdb. the two writers listed are joel surnow, who now does 24 and between this and that, and before, has had quite the illustrious career. i don't think he wrote this line. the other listed is the mysterious philip reed III. no other credits apart from this one episode of miami vice.

response I (Evan): If you google Philip Reed III you'd find out that your mysterious author pursued a graduate career in studying the works of Gaston Bachelard and Walter Benjamin at L'Ecole Normale Superior and was one of Foucault's students, who attend the famous lecture series, "Society Must Defend Itself." His studies ended in ignominy when he was expelled for drug use and assaulting another student. Shortly thereafter Reed moved to Los Angeles where he became an occasional writer for Miami Vice and MacGyver. Reed's current whereabouts are unknown.

response II (Mike?): Alright, not to sound like a nerd. But the 'tintoretto of smugglers,' - there's a chapel in Venice the ceiling of which that's covered in Tintoretto's - it may even be called the 'Tintoretto Chapel' or whatever the equivalent is in Italian.

The story behind it was, or so an art historian teacher I had made it sound, was that the commission was either going to Titian or Tintoretto. They were always competitive, with Titian usually winning out.

Word had it that the money was sliding towards Titian when Tintoretto broke in the chapel one night and started paiting it anyway. By the morning he showed the guy who owned it, who was impressed and gave the commission to Tintoretto. So 'Tintoretto of smugglers' might mean somebody who was sort of underhanded, if not because he was a little more skillful than the prevailing force and just needed to show it more.
